Last weekend, hurricane Karl hit Mexico’s gulf coast, swamping the already waterlogged state of Veracruz. Half a million people have been affected or displaced as a result of the hurricane, and thousands of families have lost their homes and belongings because of the severe floodings and strong winds that hit Veracruz. People are in dire need of help, and are waiting for basic services, food, clothes and clean water. Here a few pictures.
Fortunately, we can give them a hand from DC while having fun with friends by attending next Thursday, September 30 to the “Let’s Help Veracruz! Happy Hour” @ Lupe Mexican Catina.
The goal is to raise $3,000. You can help by donating $10 (or more if you like!) at the Happy Hour. All the money collected will be donated and deposited to Banamex (Citibank) account 3030. Banamex is one of the biggest banks in Mexico, and has launched a campaign called “Uno por Uno,” which aims at doubling the amount donated by citizens to support the people of Veracruz. So, be sure your donation will be matched dollar by dollar!
Even if this event is organized by Mexicans who are from Veracruz or just love this beautiful state, please fell free to spread the word and invite all you friends. Veracruz really needs your help, so we hope to see you there next week.
